Let’s start by some facts then we’ll get onto the article:
Fandango is a company that owns Rotten Tomatoes website.
The President of Fandango is Paul Yanover who previously was with Disney for 12 years.
Now let’s get to the article:
Rotten Tomatoes was a great movie review website. People could even vote whether they are interested in watching an upcoming movie or not.
Recently after the upcoming movie Captain Marvel star Brie Larson gave some inappropriate (discriminatory) speeches/interviews, the backlash resulted in people voting against the movie on Rotten Tomatoes. The website got around 50,000 votes and only 26% of the people where interested in watching the movie when it comes out. This is the worst rating for a Marvel Movie.. ever.
Now to do the damage control, the Marvel Studios executives and the parent company i.e. Disney came to the rescue.
They made the Rotten Tomatoes change the format of the website in a couple of days time. Now there is no “Not Interested” option on the website. Plus you can only click on “Want to See” and you can’t even un-click it.
They have gone so far that they have disabled the comment function prior to a movie’s release date. Now we cannot even comment on a movie review website that we are excited and eagerly waiting for the movie or didn’t like the trailer, comment on the cast, etc. etc.
Rotten Tomatoes is cutting down on public opinion which is ridiculous as it is a movie review website.
Criticism and Praise – both are parts of a review. Controlling media is not going to do any good to Disney (Marvel Studios).
Instead of controlling Media and websites like Rotten Tomatoes – and just shouting out on Trolls and Russian Bots – they need to understand that the damage was done by the lead cast herself and they need to control their stars running foul mouth in public. Her attitude and public speaking is causing the Studios a lot of money. They are not just losing money but respect too.
Marvel was considered untouchable till now but this incident is seriously making Marvel bleed.
