The Baner Attack happened last weekend when 2 youth groped and thrashed a 25 year old woman in Baner, Pune. Both of them got rapid bail and are out with no action taken by the police.
Now after a week, the victim and her family have mustered enough courage to go the Pune Commissioner of Police K Venkatesham to register their complain.
The girl’s mother told the Commissioner that the girl has suffered a lot of mental as well as physical trauma during the incident night. Even in the police station the accused and their friends were intimidating the girl while police was doing nothing against it. As per the girl’s mother – the charges registered by Police are also incorrect. There is also an accusation that they tried to hit her with a pot which was stopped by the girl’s friend.
Now they believe their lives are in danger as they have received threats from the accused.
Pune Commissioner of Police K Venkatesham has assured them that he will personally do the inquiry of the case. Also assured them that both accused will be under watch and no such incident will recur. And any loop hole found in the part of the Police Station where the case was registered will also be looked into. He also said that more patrolling & security measures will be taken so that such incidents don’t occur.
Now let me ask why the Police Station officers did not do adequate work? Why was there no female constable (as reported)? Why were accused not dealt with strictness when in Police Station? Why the police did not write the full complain that the girl told them?
This need to change. There needs to be more accountability in the police department. Atleast FIR registration needs to become more transparent. Actions taken by officers should be documented so that there is accountability.
May be people can come up with a better structure but it needs to happen. Too much corruption in Police Department has broken a lot of people’s faith in the system. They need to do something to re-establish this faith and it won’t be easy especially after such incidents.
